What’s good? #56

With so much stuff on the various streaming services, it can be a little overwhelming finding something to watch, especially when one scrolls through, seeing many possibilities, but nothing that in particular that stands out. With that said, the purpose of these weekly posts is to share something that i watch on the service. Hopefully it will help someone find something new…or keep them from something they might have wasted their time with otherwise.

This week I’m going to cover…

Genre: Mystery, drama, sitcom, romance, sci-fi
Duration: 1 seasons (8 episodes; ~29-47 min each)
Cast: Elisabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Kathryn Hahn, Teyonah Parrish, Randall Park, Kat Dennings, Josh Stamberg, Debra Jo Rupp
Streaming Service: Disney+

In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos takes the Mind stone from Vision, killing him in the process and leaving Wanda emotionally distraught, In Avengers: Endgame, we see Wanda again in the final battle, but what happens afterwards? Surely, the death of her boyfriend had to have an affect on her psyche, right? Well, this is where WandaVision picks up.

The series starts with Wanda and Vision living the perfect sitcom life of the 50s. The kind of life one would see in show like I Love Lucy, The Dick van Dyke Show, and other sitcom from the era, complete with laugh track. Each of the early episodes follows the same formula, just changing decades, but it is obvious that something is off, and that is where the show gets interesting.

What is this mysterious force controlling the sitcom life? What are the voices Wanda keeps hearing? Why are there no children in the town?

Starting in episode 4, I believe, we start to get answers (and even more questions), as the veil is lifted and we find out Wanda is behind this all, but why? That is a question that, as of this writing, I have not seen answered. Episode 8 just dropped Friday and I will be watching it this evening. I hear that some big bombs were dropped that change everything.

When this show first started there were numerous complaints from so-called fans ranging from the sitcom format, to the episode length, to not having any spoilers on-line, etc. I am a fan of classic sitcoms and I grew up in a time before the internet no spoilers is just another throwback episode of this show for me. I loved all of that! Not to mention, it is nice to be surprised for once. Too bad people on facebook and youtube can’t wait until those of us who have actual jobs and lives to post spoilers and such.

Even though the MCU seems to want Captain Marvel to be the most powerful and bestest ever, if you get nothing from this show, it is apparent that Wanda is hands down the most powerful Avenger and she hasn’t even tapped into her full potential. It is actually quite scary when you think about it. She can warp reality, create and entire illusion (which she can subconsciously control, and alter things at the molecular level. Scary powerful, I tell ya!

I’m not going to lie, the acting in the is hit or miss, but that could be the idea. If you’ve watched classic sitcoms, you’ll notice they weren’t the best actors, either. It was nice seeing Kat Dennings bring her sarcastic, dry wit back to the MCU (not to mention her glorious curves) as Darcy. Also, Randall Park returns as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo. These two are most notable, but there are a few other minor characters from the films that are given a chance to do something more with this show.

Outside of Wanda (and Vision), a big talking point of this show has been Monica Rambeau. Teyonah Parris is bringing this character to life and it remains to be seen where the MCU will take her (hopefully the new Captain Marvel), but there is lots of promise, spunk, and rebel there. She’s getting positive responses, so I’m sure we’ll see more of her going forward.

Each episode has grabbed my attention and then the twists at the end have taken it to the next level. As I round the corner and head toward the penultimate and final episodes I am more than excited and sad as to how this will all end. The possibilities are endless, especially with the reveal at the end of the last episode (ep. 7). It’s going to be a bumpy ride. If you haven’t jumped on yet, you should really do so!
